Montessori Elementary School of Chico offers excellent educational opportunities for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The school is on a traditional schedule. The school day is from 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. After and before school care is available for $4.00 per hour. Please drop by for a visit or call us at 343-4308. What is Montessori?

The Montessori method of education is named after Italy’s first woman doctor, Maria Montessori. Montessori believed that children learned best within a social environment which supports each individual’s unique development. What makes Montessori Elementary unique?

  • Individualized instruction: students work at their own pace and developmental stages are honored.
  • Hands-on learning: these provide a kinesthetic memory, going from the concrete to the abstract.
  • Students have ownership of the classroom: they clean and maintain their room; students make up their own classroom agreements.
  • Method - encouragement - self-esteem: Students are accepted for who they are in a nurturing environment.

  • Development of good work-study habits: students learn how to successfully monitor their own work and complete assignments.

What does your Montessori curriculum consist of?

  • MATH: calculation; memorization of facts; story problems; geometry; manipulation of objects allows child to feel competent in math skills.
  • READING: phonics; reading throughout the curriculum; poetry; Barnell Loft and SRA programs; research skills; mechanics of language; grammar and vocabulary.
  • SPANISH: conversational and written.
  • SPELLING: weekly spelling homework and tests.
  • HANDWRITING: manuscript and cursive.
  • PHYSICAL EDUCATION: daily activities; games; aerobics; skills development; Tai-Chi; Yoga; cooperative games and stretching exercises.
  • HISTORY: The study of time; the earth from prehistory to current day.
  • GEOGRAPHY: the study of the continents; landforms; customs and celebrations of countries; the needs of people.
  • BOTANY: a complete study of plant life, their parts and needs.
  • ZOOLOGY: a thorough study of external parts; internal systems; and the needs of animal life, includes pet care and maintenance.
  • CHEMISTRY/PHYSICS: a beginning look at the “How and Why” of chemistry and physics.
  • ARTS/CRAFTS/MUSIC/DRAMA: Creative arts are integrated into the curriculum in both the lower and upper elementary classes.
  • PRACTICAL LIFE: Montessori focuses on the whole child, therefore, cooking, sewing, gardening, knitting, classroom maintenance and other practical chores are included in a child’s school day.
